INTRODUCTION

 

            Forest is a precious component of living system existing in the earth & an integral part to maintain Ecological balance. It is the basic resources for socio-economical upliftment of human civilization. But the prevailing trend of depletion of forest has become a serious concern. So to ensure the sustainable development in perpetuity has become main motto and thus the forest department under the government of Orissa is working in this line. The Deogarh Forest Division is functioning keeping the motto for augmentation of forest resources under Central Management as per the provision laid in the current Working Plan having the validity period 1995-96 to 2015-2016 .Side by side due importance have been given to the different resolutions, notifications and circulars as well as amendment in the forest lay to carry out the forestry programme.

 

            The categories of forest areas available in this Division under Deogarh District are

 

a.                   Reserve Forests                                  : 57,448.349 Ha.

b.                  Demarcated Protected Forests            : 17,605.000 Ha.

c.                   Village Forests                                    :      393.430 Ha.

d.                  Un-Demarcated Protected Forests      : 53,876.800 Ha.

e.                   Un-classed Forests                             :          4.067 Ha.

f.                    Non-Forest land with forests               :          8.060 Ha.

         TOTAL:          1,29,335.708 Ha.

            From the protection point of view this division (under Deogarh Dist.) has been sub-divided into :

iii.                  Forest Beats            :            50 Beats.

 

A.        Forest Protection through Joint Forest Management Policy

 

            65 nos. of Van Samrakshyuana Samiti (V.S.S.) have been constituted in this division under Deogarh Dist. for forest protection through Joint Forest Management.

 

B.             Protection through the Forest Officials stationed at the different places

                       

            The Forest Officials have been posted in the capacity of Forest Rangers, Forester & Beat Guards in each level & are looking after the protection aspects of forests. In this connection the information regarding forest offence cases booked in this Division are furnished below;

REFORESTATION PROGRAMME

 

            The degraded forest as well as the existing growth of forest has been augmented by supplementing with the plantation activity by planting the species of ecological and economical importance. The medicinal aspect has also been equally emphasized. The followings are under the category;

 

            Medicinal Plantation :             1.             Kerjang          2002-2003    125 Ha.

                                                         2.             Nageswar       2002-2003      75 Ha.

            Besides, the following departmental work has been taken up in this division during the year 2002-2003.

 

            1.             Maintenance of boundary line and pillar posting work over 571.43 Kms.

            2.             Repair of Forest road over 42.86 Kms.

 

SUCCESS STORIES

 

a.                   J.F.M./V.S.S. Activities.

 

There have been 81 nos. of V.S.S. constituted in Deogarh District. Out of those V.S.S., 21 nos. of active V.S.S. have been included in the Forest Development Agency of Deogarh Division with a view to involve the general public in V.S.S. work. An work plan programme for 2002-2003 to 2006-2007 amounting to Rs.2,24,36,350.00 has been submitted to National Afforestation & Eco-development Board for approval.
